He was born William Paul Mitchell and came from a musical family. His parents and his sister loved disco and hip hop and he drew his inspiration from that. He was attending John Browne High School when then-unknown rapper Nas approached him after his classes ended. He wanted him to mix his demo of his now-legendary album Illmatic. Though he refused a producer credit on the demo, it still became his big break and he continued to work with Nas.
