He married Laurie Krasny Brown, with whom he had two sons (Tolon Adam and Tucker Eliot) and a daughter (Eliza Morgan). He developed the Arthur character while telling bedtime stories to one of his sons. He studied graphic design at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Later, he worked several odd jobs, including cook, truck driver, and teacher.
