He grew up in Crockham Hill, Kent, England. After graduating from Oxford University, he taught in Canada. His early work, The Bear Looked Over the Mountain (published in 1977), won both the Alice Hunt Bartlett Prize and the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize.
