Kathryn Tucker Windham is best known as a Novelist. Southern author who became famous for several books of ghost stories, including the 1969 collection, "13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey." She also became known as a storyteller, performing both for live audiences and on Alabama Public Radio. Kathryn Tucker Windham was born on June 2, 1918 in Alabama.
She was born in Selma, Alabama, and she grew up in nearby Thomasville. Her cousin owned a newspaper called The Thomasville Times for which she began writing when she was just twelve years old. Her childhood experiences inspired her to write the book, Alabama: One Big Front Porch. She graduated from Huntingdon College in 1939 and subsequently became a reporter for both The Birmingham News and The Alabama Journal.
