He was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil but later moved to San Diego, California to continue his BJJ training. He earned his third degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He began earning recognition for his fighting in 2002 when he won a gold medal at the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Championships. In 2004, he went on to compete in the Pan American Championships where he also took home the gold medal as well. He made his MMA debut in 2008.
